Police: 4-year-old child accidentally shoots self

Police in DeKalb County say a 4-year-old child somehow obtained a gun and accidentally shot himself in the head and suffered a grazing wound on Tuesday.

According to DeKalb police, the shooting happened at a home in the 3800 block of Cedar Chase Lane in DeKalb County.

Police said the boy found the .38 caliber gun inside a drawer at the home. Five other children and two adults were home at the time, according to authorities. Police said that they do not expect charges to be filed.

"I have no indications yet that this family did not take all adequate precautions," said DeKalb Public Safety Director William Z. Miller.

The child suffered a grazing wound to the forehead and is expected to be OK. The 4-year-old was transported to an area hospital. A parent is with the child at the hospital.

The shooting remains under investigation.
