Pascual Perez Killed: Former Braves Pitcher Killed in His Home in the Dominican Republic
Former Braves pitcher Pascual Perez was killed Thursday at his home in the Dominican Republic. He was 55 years old.
A statement from police in the Caribbean country says Perez was attacked by several people inside his home in a town west of the capital. He had been struck in the head but the cause of death has not been released. No suspects are in custody.
Perez pitched for the Pirates, Braves, Expos and Yankees in an 11-year big league career from 1980-91. The right-hander had a record of 67-68 with a 3.44 ERA in 207 games, including 193 starts.
He was suspended in 1992 following two positive tests for cocaine. In recent years, he has had kidney problems.
According to the Dominican Today newspaper, Perez was the victim of an armed robbery.
The paper said Perez suffered a stab wound to the neck, adding that a potential motive for the robbery was that he had just received money from his Major League Baseball pension.
Considered one of baseball's characters during his career, Perez once missed a start because he was unable to find his way off I-285 which circles Atlanta.
