New York gets its own domain name
New York City is getting its own domain name.

New York has become \"one of the first cities in the world\" to get its very own top-level domain name, giving a welcome boost to the local economy and further enhancing the city's already impressive brand.

For a fee, anyone with a physical address in New York City will soon be able to scrap the traditional .com and .net domains for .nyc.

\"Having our own unique, top-level domain - .nyc - puts New York City at the forefront of the digital landscape and creates new opportunities for our small businesses,\" said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

\"They'll now be able to identify themselves as connected to New York City, one of the world's strongest and most prestigious brands.\"

Applications to use the new domain will open later this year.

Only a handful of other cities, including London and Paris, have reached the same stage in their \"digital development\". Melboue is also getting its own domain, with .melboue set to become available next year. New York is the first city in the United States to secure a unique domain name.

Christine Quinn, the city council speaker and a potential candidate to replace Mayor Bloomberg, was instrumental in pushing for the domain name several years ago.

\"With a new top-level domain name, New York won't just be the greatest city in the world - we'll also be the greatest city on the inteet,\" Speaker Quinn said.
