MVP of traffic cameras rakes in $11.6 million in speeding tickets
If you live or work in Washington, watch your speed on New York Avenue, or you’re likely to end up paying for it. Fed up with the number of traffic fatalities on the road, D.C. police installed a speed camera about two years ago. In that span, that lone camera has issued 116,734 tickets — amounting to an impressive $11.6 million in fines. The police department says traffic-related deaths have dropped, and proponents argue that the cameras improve safety conditions. Cynics, though, call it a revenue-generating "backdoor commuter tax" against suburban drivers that does little to ensure safe roads. [Source]
