More Repairs Planned on Buford Highway
Crews have planned road closures to repair part of Buford Highway in Duluth on Monday after it was damaged by excessive heat and rain.
Earlier in the week, part of the highway had to be closed emergently after it buckled due to the conditions. Now, GDOT crews say they’ll close one lane of Buford Highway at a time between McGinnis Ferry Road and Sugarloaf Parkway on Monday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. while repairs are completed.
Delays are expected in the area, so drivers are being cautioned to allow extra time or take a different route.
Officials say the aging concrete that formed the foundation of the roadway expanded due to the extreme heat and abundance of rain that accumulated. The concrete heaved, pushing the roadway up and raising the driving surface about two feet across both lanes of the highway.
GDOT says they’ll install the top 1 ½ to 2 inches of asphalt to create a smooth driving surface for motorists on this portion of Buford Highway.
