Local students mourn death of popular high school athlete Zachary Robinson
Counselors will be on hand at a local high school to help students after a popular football player died in a crash.
Zachary Robinson, 17, was involved in a fatal crash Tuesday in Henry County.
Woodland High School students say he was a gentle giant. They gathered for two prayer circles at the school Wednesday; one in the cafeteria and one on the football field.
The marquee in front of the school reads "Rest in Peace Zachary." Grief counselors have been available and will be there again Thursday.
Most students leaed of the death of their fellow Wolfpack member at school Wednesday.
"It was very emotional this moing at school, said one student.
Robinson was a lineman on the football team and a wrestler.
He was driving to an appointment Tuesday moing when he hit a box truck head-on. Robinson was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died 12 hours later.
Students told reporters they came together as a family to comfort each other.
”Seeing my friends be extremely sad about it made me really sad and the fact that I knew him, said another student.
Another student said she and her friends were able to meet with grief counselors at the school.
”It really helped. We wrote letters to him, she said.
Robinson would have joined his football teammates Wednesday to celebrate national signing day when seniors accept offers to play in college.
The team took that opportunity to take a photo with his jersey.
Funeral services have not been announced.
