Lawyer Not Convinced Client Killed State Trooper
ATLANTA - The family of a man accused of shooting and killing a Georgia state patrol trooper told Channel 2’s Eric Byfield they have not spoken to Gregory Favors since his arrest.
Family spokesman and lawyer Michael Mann said the family regretted the trooper’s death and offered their condolences. Favor’s sister-in-law sat next to Mann but did not speak during the interview.
"The family wants to say they are very remorseful. They don't know what happened. They haven't spoken to Greg. They've heard all of this stuff, had a lot of media placed upon them and they're just very sad about what happened," said Mann.
Authorities said Favors was driving on Bolton Road in Atlanta on Dec. 27 when Trooper Chadwick LeCroy tried to stop him for a broken headlight.
Favors fled from the officer, then crashed his car on an embankment, police said. Authorities said Favors shot LeCroy in the neck when the trooper approached the car.
Mann suggested to Byfield another alteative for what may have happened that night.
”I've been hearing some things that there was another person in the car. The truth will come out one day," said Mann.
Investigators told GA Daily News they’re confident Favors is the man who killed Lecroy.
Mann said Favor’s family has the Lecroy family in their prayers, but they are also afraid.
"They're scared about their own safety because they've had threats put upon them which is unfair," said Mann.
Favors is set to retu to court on Jan. 12.
LeCroy was stationed at Post 48 in Atlanta and belonged to the Criminal Suppression Unit. He is the first trooper to be killed by gunfire in 35 years and the 27th Georgia State trooper to be killed in the line of duty, officials said.
