Officials confirm an Atlanta Police officer shot a man at Woodruff Park after the suspect assaulted a Georgia State University Police officer with a knife.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, an APD officer tried to question a man who appeared to be drinking alcohol around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say the man kept walking and came across a GSU police officer, who police say was helping assist the APD officer in the apprehension of the suspect. The GSU officer was in plain clothes.

The suspect took out a large butcher knife and assaulted the GSU officer with it.

The man who stabbed the officer was shot by the APD officer, to stop the assault.

According to Atlanta Police, the GSU officer was injured in the incident. Both the officer and suspect were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and are in stable condition.

The Atlanta police officer was not injured. Eyewitnesses tell reporters the APD officer is a woman.
