CAUSTIC comic Joan Rivers is in critical condition after she stopped breathing during surgery, reports TMZ.

Rivers was said to be having vocal chord surgery at a New York clinic when doctors noticed that she wasn’t breathing and, at one point, her heart stopped.

An emergency call was placed at 9:39am on Thursday reporting “somebody in either cardiac or respiratory arrest,” according to TMZ.

The comic is said to have been transferred to Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital, and her daughter, Melissa, is flying in from Los Angeles.

The 81-year-old has had a stressful week pulling double Fashion Police duty with the VMAs and the Emmys back to back. She has also been promoting her latest book, Diary of a Mad Diva.
