The hysteria surrounding Flappy Bird appeared to have reached fever pitch when an iPhone 5 featuring the game allegedly sold on eBay for $94,000.

However, the posting has now vanished from the auction website, without an explanation or confirmation the purchase went through.

There are rumours the item was taken down by eBay as the listing contravened its rules but this has yet to be confirmed.

Gamers seemed eager to get their hands on the 16GB smartphone loaded with Flappy Bird after the mobile game was taken down indefinitely by its creator on Sunday.

Interest was strong from the start of bidding at 1am, with users offering $7,000 within a couple of hours.

Flappy Bird, which involves guiding a bird through green pipes, can no longer be downloaded but is still available for the millions of people who already had it.

On Sunday, a second-hand iPhone with the game downloaded attracted a $658 bid on eBay.
