How high do gas prices need to climb for gas taxes to go up?

The Georgia Department of Revenue reports that statewide gas prices would have to average $4.10 per gallon for regular for a four-week time span before state law would mandate an adjustment in the state’s gasoline sales tax.

The tax must be readjusted whenever prices rise by 25 percent during an interim period between the state’s regular tax adjustments in January and July.

The current tax set went into effect Jan. 1, but is based on a snapshot of prices taken in November.  The Department of Revenue says the average street price for regular gas at the time was $3.28.

The state averages in the price for three grades of gasoline, but the average is 88 percent weighted toward regular since that is by the state’s most pumped fuel.
