Horror as two dead and dozens injured as double-decker bus hits overpass at Miami Airport
Two people were killed and dozens more injured, including three in critical condition, after a bus hit an overpass at Miami Inteational Airport.
Airport spokesman Greg Chin said the bus, which was a cruise or tour bus, hit the overpass going into the airport's arrivals section on Saturday moing. The bus was traveling about 20 mph when it clipped the roof entrance.
There were a total of 32 people aboard the bus, and all have some sort of injuries. About half the passengers were taken to a hospital for their injuries, and the others were treated on the scene.
Wrong Way: Authorities said that the bus entered the wrong way and was unable to clear the eight-and-a-half foot overpass.
It appears that the bus was too tall for the entrance to the arrivals area, which has a clearance of about 8 feet 6 inches, said Chin. Buses are supposed to go through the departures area, which has a higher ceiling, he said.
According to police reports, one of the victims died instantly having been sitting towards the front-end of the bus, which was crushed. The second victim died shortly thereafter at the hospital. It is still unclear who the two victims were or whether they were male or female.
Miami-Dade police Lt. Rosanna Cordero-Stutz said the bus is privately owned and typically used for tours. It's not immediately clear where the bus was headed, but Cordero-Stutz said the driver was unfamiliar with the area and did not intend to wind up at the airport.
Rescue crews told NBC Miami, however, that the bus was heading to the arrivals area of the airport to drop of its passengers. The arrival area remained blocked off by fire trucks and police cars Saturday moing.
Devastating: Officials say at least three people are in critical condition and that everyone on the bus was injured in some form.
Open Investigation: It is still unclear where the bus was going, but authorities say that passengers were on some kind of tour.
