Harry Brett Taylor, Boy Scout leader accused of molestation wants a new judge
A former Boy Scout leader accused of child molestation is arguing that he may not get a fair trial.
Harry Brett Taylor of Lawrenceville faces 32 different charges based on allegations made by 12 different children in 2008. He’s still waiting for a trial and now his defense team is seeking a new judge.
"It's very frustrating. I don’t even live in this state and I have to travel back here because I want to make sure things are moving and they're not moving, said Joane Coish, a mother of two of the alleged victims and Taylor's ex-wife.
Taylor took advantage of young boys during sleepovers at his Lawrenceville home, according to a 2009 grand jury indictment.
Taylor was charged with aggravated child molestation, criminal attempt to commit child molestation, child molestation, sexual exploitation of children, aggravated sexual battery and sexual battery.
During Thursday’s hearing, Judge Melody Snell Connor initially signed an order allowing news cameras in the courtroom but then ordered all cameras out at the defense attoey’s request, according to Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh who was in the courtroom.
The defense argued the judge overseeing the case may be biased because her current staff attoey worked for the district attoey when the case began. District Attoey Danny Porter said that attoey had absolutely no involvement with the case whatsoever.
The families are waiting for Connor’s ruling. They told Kavanaugh that each legal delay postpones the healing process.
"The victims don't seem to have rights, Coish said.
Connor said she would need a day or two to issue her ruling. Taylor remains in the Gwinnett County Jail.
