Gwinnett Man Antonio Cardenas-Rico Charged In Children's Fatal Stabbing

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Gwinnett County police detectives were back at the neighborhood Friday where three children and their father were attacked this week.

Antonio Cardenas-Rico is charged with murdering Edward Garcia, 1, and his brother Bradley, 3. Police say they have not determined a motive.

Police say even though they have a suspect in jail, they are a long way from piecing together the horrific crime.

Complicating matters is the revelation that one week before Elvis Garcia and his family were stabbed, he went to police apparently afraid for his life. Garcia came to them claiming his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend had threatened to kill him. The conflict stemmed over the children.

The man identified as making the threat was not Antonio Cardenas-Rico, but another man, Patrick Cardenas. Investigators say they are not sure if Patrick Cardenas and Antonio Cardenas-Rico are related or maybe even the same person using an alias.

Police say they responded to a 911 call Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to a home on Bridle Path Drive. When units arrived at the scene, they discovered Elvis Garcia, 23, outside the home with multiple stab wounds. The bodies of the two boys were discovered in the basement.

Authorities say that Elvis Garcia's condition has improved and is expected to live. The 3-year-old boy remains in critical condition but doctors are unsure if he will survive. The boy's mother is with her son at the hospital.

The Garcia family issued a statement Friday saying, "Our hearts are forever broken and we are left without words to describe the horrible tragedy that has entered our lives. We loved Bradley and Edward with all our hearts and we are trying our best to cope with this situation. We still cannot understand or explain this tragedy. Our prayers are with Joshua, who is fighting for his life and we ask everyone to remember him in your prayers. His life is in God's hands now and we trust in God's will. Thank you, the Garcia family."
