GSP: Trooper dragged by car, shoots driver Gerald Williams at golf club
ATLANTA - The state patrol says a trooper was dragged by a car after an incident tued violent at the PGA Tour Championship in East Lake on Sunday.
The incident happened while traffic was letting out from the PGA Touament at East Lake. Troopers working that detail came in contact with a driver, who they say put them in a dangerous situation.
Two Georgia state troopers were working traffic detail outside the PGA golf touament at East Lake when investigators say a man who wasn't supposed to be there, tried to drive on to the property.
"A subject pulled up in a gold Satu, in an area he was not allowed to be," said Capt. Paul Cosper of the Georgia State Patrol.
The troopers say they tried to stop the man but say he wouldn't get out of the vehicle. That's when they say the situation escalated quickly.
"The suspect then became irate, the trooper opened the vehicle door, tried to remove the suspect from the vehicle and at that point in time the suspect accelerated and started dragging him. Another trooper was on scene, thought the trooper's life was in jeopardy and shot twice," said Cosper.
Investigators say Gerald Williams, 32, was taken to Grady Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating.
"Our inteal affairs unit will be doing an investigation in concert with them, but they're the lead investigative authority on the matter," said Cosper.
Both troopers are on administrative leave during the investigation. Authorities say neither trooper involved in the situation was hurt.
