A Georgia Tech police officer was injured in a crash Monday, February 28.

ATLANTA - A Georgia Tech police officer is recovering at Grady Hospital Monday after crashing his squad car into a tanker truck.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m. Monday at the Intersection of Pine and Centennial Olympic Park Drive near the campus of Georgia Tech.

Investigators say Georgia Tech Police Officer Joseph Figura, 25, was responding to an Officer Needs Assistance call on Ivan Allen, Jr. Boulvard NE where an Atlanta police officer was struggling with a suspect.

Figura's police car collided with the truck as the truck was making a left tu from Centennial Olympic Park Drive when the light tued green. The officer's car rear ended the truck, plowing under the rear bumper of the truck.

Firefighters say there was just a minor fuel leak from the tanker which they quickly contained.

Figura's injuries are not considered serious. The driver of the truck, identified as Terry Lamar Martin, was not injured.

Georgia Tech authorities say Figura is a three year veteran of the Georgia Tech Police Department.

The accident is under investigation.
