Federal prosecutors have announced an indictment accusing a South Georgia sheriff, his son and two others of violating the rights of an inmate.

The 14-count indictment announced Friday lists charges against Wilcox County Sheriff Stacy Bloodsworth; his son Austin Bloodsworth; former Wilcox County jailer Casey Owens; and former inmate Willie James Caruthers.

The indictment says the sheriff, his son and Caruthers assaulted two inmates, and all four men assaulted a third inmate inside the county jail in July 2009.

The indictment says one inmate suffered a broken jaw and the other two had bruises and scratches. Prosecutors also say the four tried to cover up the assaults, among other charges.

It was not immediately clear whether the four were in custody or whether any of them had lawyers.

Wilcox County is about 150 miles southeast of Atlanta.
