The campaign of Georgia Goveor Nathan Deal (R) appears to be very confident tonight on the Election Day, proclaiming that the incumbent will take the election against state Sen. Jason Carter (D) with more than 50 percent of the vote, avoiding the runoff.

”We’re seeing Republican tuout above our modeling in GOP strongholds, said Deal spokesman Brian Robinson. ”We’re going to get a couple of points over 50. We’re not getting by on the skin of our teeth.

Deal certainly has reasons to be confident. All recent polling showed him with an advantage over Carter, and the closer the election drew the more support the goveor attracted.  In addition, a Landmark Communications poll from yesterday showed Deal with 50.8 percent of the vote and Carter six points behind. Just 2 percent of the voters were undecided in that poll.

Candidates have to get 50 percent of the vote plus one in order to win the general election. If none of the candidates reach that number, a runoff election takes place between the top two candidates. The runoff for goveor’s race in 2014 is scheduled for Dec. 2nd.

Goveor Deal was first elected to political office in 1980 as a Democrat in Georgia Senate. In 1992 he was elected to U.S. House of Representatives and in 1995 joined the Republican Party.  Deal resigned from office in 2010 while running for Georgia goveor.  In the 34-year long political career, the 82nd Goveor of Georgia never lost an election.
