Fulton County Jail Supervisor Captain Benita Wallace Fired
ATLANTA - A Fulton County Jail supervisor was dismissed for keeping a gun inside an area of the jail accessible to some inmates.
A spokesperson for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said Captain Benita Wallace left her .44 caliber Glock in an unlocked drawer in that secured area, going against jail policy. The gun was in an office where inmate cleaning crews regularly work. The Fulton County Jail requires all deputies to place their guns in a lockbox inside the facility.
Wallace is a 22-year veteran of the agency. She has been credited with helping to mold policy for the jail.
FOX 5 News spoke with a friend of Wallace who said the punishment shouldn’t have been as severe as her dismissal, but added she understand the danger if the gun fell into the wrong hands.
Wallace has an opportunity to appeal the dismissal. Officials with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office maintain her firing was the appropriate action in this case.
