Former Georgia detention officer Zachary Paul Wisham accused of taking bribes, smuggling contraband into jail
GRADY COUNTY, Ga. — A former detention officer is facing charges following a months-long investigation into alleged corruption and contraband trafficking at the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators arrested Zachary Paul Wisham, who previously worked at the Grady County Detention Center in Cairo. He has been charged with violation of oath of office and bribery, according to the sheriff’s office.
The investigation began in August 2025 after authorities received information alleging that contraband was being brought into the jail and that some detention staff members were accepting illegal payments in exchange for prohibited items and official favors.
Over the course of several months, investigators reviewed recorded inmate phone calls, financial documents, surveillance footage, internal audits, witness statements, and physical evidence.
Officials say the evidence showed that Wisham knowingly solicited and accepted money from inmates and individuals outside the facility in exchange for smuggling contraband, providing unauthorized assistance, and sharing confidential information.
Authorities allege that Wisham used his position for personal financial gain, actions they say jeopardized the safety and security of the detention center.
As a sworn officer, Wisham had taken an oath to uphold Georgia law and faithfully perform his duties. Investigators concluded his actions constituted a willful violation of that oath and met the legal definition of bribery under state law.
The investigation remained active from August 2025 through February 2026 and involved coordination across multiple divisions within the sheriff’s office. After reviewing the findings, officials secured warrants and took Wisham into custody.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the case reflects its commitment to accountability.
“We will not tolerate misconduct by anyone entrusted with public authority,” the agency said. “When violations occur, they will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.”
Authorities said the probe was conducted to protect inmates, staff, and the public, and to maintain trust in law enforcement.
The case remains under review. Anyone with information related to the investigation or other potential criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
