The Floyd County Sheriff's Office has confirmed one of their former deputies was killed in Afghanistan.

The Sheriff's Office says former Deputy Barry Sutton was in Afghanistan training law enforcement as part of NATO's Resolute Support Mission.

Sutton served the Rome and Floyd County community for more than 15 years as a law enforcement officer.

While working in Afghanistan Sutton was a contractor with DynCorp Inteational.

DynCorp says Sutton was killed when the vehicle he and other team members were attacked by a suicide bomber.

Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter said Sutton was a great family man who left law enforcement to provide for his family.

"He knew the risks and rewards," Burkhalter said. "I'm proud to have associated with him and I mou with his family and extended law enforcement family.
