GRIMES, Iowa — A FedEx employee who said she had no idea she was pregnant unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby boy during her work shift, authorities and the woman told local media.

Amethyst Blumberg, 29, was finishing her shift at a FedEx facility in Grimes about 8 a.m. Monday when she felt a sudden urge to use the restroom, she told KCCI. Moments later, she realized she was in labor.

“I couldn’t even get off the toilet,” Blumberg said. “I get up and I feel his head.”

Blumberg called for help and was able to open the restroom door before emergency responders arrived. Members of the Johnston-Grimes Fire District reached the facility about 8:29 a.m., and Blumberg’s son, Onyx King Easterlie, was born about four minutes later, officials said. He weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 19 inches.

Both mother and baby were transported to a hospital, where they were reported to be in good condition. Fire district officials said they were relieved that everyone was healthy.

Blumberg said she had shown no typical pregnancy symptoms during her second pregnancy and was even losing weight in the weeks before giving birth. “It was very surprising,” she said. “I was in utter shock.”
