Fatal hit-and-run charges dropped against woman, sister Esther Escobar charged
Charges have been dropped against a woman accused in a deadly hit-and-run in Norcross after her sister confessed to the crime on the witness stand.
Usually when someone is freed from jail for a crime they didn’t commit, they’re smiling from ear to ear. But Ruth Escobar and her family threw names and elbows as she walked free.
When asked how she felt about being free.
Escobar replied, in English, ”I don’t speak English.
Escobar shook her finger and walked away when Thomas tried to talk to her as she waited for family to pick her up.
Ruth Escobar was previously charged in the April 13, 2014 hit-and-run that killed 85-year-old Kanaiyalal P. Patel, who was walking across Kings Ridge Drive at Singleton Road.
Witnesses led police to Escobar, who was charged with vehicular homicide, among other charges. She allegedly tried to cover up the crime by reporting the car stolen. Witnesses pegged Escobar as the driver, but police now say they charged the wrong woman.
On April 24, Ruth Escobar's sister, 46-year-old Esther Escobar, took the witness stand and claimed responsibility for the crime, prompting an investigation into her statement. On Wednesday, Esther Escobar was determined to be the driver during the fatal crash. She was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run, driving without a valid license, failure to stop at a stop sign, and an equipment violation for the vehicle's tires not having enough tread.
As Thomas was attempting to get Ruth Escobar’s reaction to her release, she elbowed him out of the way and another family member began to call him an animal and a snitch.
While Ruth Escobar is free, her sister remains jailed. Police say Esther Escobar was charged with running over and killing Patel last month then fleeing to Califoia. She retued to Georgia in an effort to free her sister in a court hearing.
Some of the family members could still face charges as police investigate who may have helped in trying to cover up the crime.
