Family: Fire kills Newnan woman Sonya Harris as she cooks dinner for her husband
A woman died in a house fire in East Newnan, Monday night.
Investigators said when they arrived at the house on Virginia Avenue, Sonya Harris was already dead.
Family told CBS46 the victim's husband retued to his house to find it filled with smoke and he was the first person to discover his wife was dead inside.
"He said he was coming home and he spotted the smoke when he tued the coer. He came home and he went in the house and found her lying on the floor. The ceiling had fallen on her. He and his neighbor got them out of the house a little before the fire trucks got there," said Rachel Wimbush.
According to his brother, the husband left Harris there less than an hour earlier to bring medicine to his mother. He used a flashlight to find his wife in the smoke and brought her to the driveway where he tried to revive her. Relatives believe she died trying to put the fire out.
"My heart sank. My heart just dropped, because we're so close to the family," said the victim's cousin, Sonya Pope.
The last time Harris' family was here, it was Thanksgiving and the house was filled with laughter.
"We all cooked and brought stuff over, but she stayed on her feet in the kitchen all day long," said Wimbush.
Allene Smith remembers setting her brother up with Harris before they had children together.
"They met and they've been together for a very long time. They got married and they're just happy. I know that my brother is going to truly miss her because if you see him, she's right beside him, and if you see her, he's right there. They were always together all the time."
Investigators said there are no apparent signs of foul play, and the working theory pre-autopsy is that Harris must have died from smoke inhalation.
