An Emory University professor is being honored with a lifetime achievement award for contributions to the study of American literature.

Frances Smith Foster will be the first black woman to receive the Jay B. Hubbell Medal when she accepts the award next month from the Mode Language Association.

Foster is a professor of English and women's studies at the private Atlanta college. She has edited or written more than a dozen books and specializes in black family life and literature.

The award has been given since 1964.
