Eatonton GA Police Arrest 4 In Br'er Rabbit Theft

EATONTON, Ga. -- It's not quite a storybook ending for four people who were charged with stealing a Br'er Rabbit statue.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said 19-year-old Shaun Michael Bachman, 19-year-old Adam Beard Beckstine, 19-year-old Austin Clark Coleman and 18-year-old Caleb Lawrence Reaves were charged in the theft.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told The Atlanta Joual-Constitution that the incident started as a prank "but went awry after the statue was damaged."

The 3-foot iron statute, which weighs about 250 pounds, was stolen from the grounds of the Uncle Remus Museum in Eatonton on Aug. 7. It was recovered a week later but its tobacco pipe and left ear were broken.

Br'er Rabbit is a character in the famed Uncle Remus tales penned by Georgia author Joel Chandler Harris.
