Police told Channel 2’s Darryn Moore that Hanyurwimfura may have been speeding.
”It seems to be a fairly high rate, according to witnesses who observed this, and we believe alcohol is a factor, said Cobb County Sgt. Dana Pierce.
Hanyurwimfura and two passengers, Franklyn Isibor, 22, and Thierry Damon Hart, 21, were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
But a third passenger did not make it. Nineteen-year-old Lawrence Ogunnowo, of Lawrenceville, died at the crash scene, police said.
”We are investigating, as far as the driver, what he was doing at the time and where they were at prior to the accident, and that’s going to be our investigation throughout the moing, said Pierce.
Police reopened the ramp to Chastain Road just after 6 a.m. on Friday. Later that day, Hanyurwimfura was charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
Ogunnowo was a student at Kennesaw State University with Isibor. The school offered its condolences to Ogunnowo's family in a news release.
"The entire KSU community is devastated by the news of Lawrence’s passing. He was a bright student who was extremely active and well-liked by his fellow students, faculty and staff," said Jerome Ratchford, KSU’s vice president for student success. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawrence’s family and friends during this most difficult time, and also with the others who were injured in the accident."
