Developer MBA Construction Proposes Expanding Downtown Athens

ATHENS, Ga. - A developer is proposing a four-story commercial and multifamily development at the site of a closed sports bar that would add another new building to downtown Athens.

Athens-Clarke County development officials hope to expand downtown east to the North Oconee River. But the proposal by MBA Construction would beef up another part of the downtown area.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that it's not clear whether the building would be marketed to students or professionals, but student apartments near the University of Georgia campus have been making a comeback.

The proposal comes as the Athens-Clarke Economic Development Foundation floats a $41 million proposal to assemble 16 acres of land on the easte fringe of downtown to create a "river district" that markets to high-tech firms and other employers.
