A DeKalb County commissioner, at the center of a federal investigation, announced her resignation on Monday.

Commissioner Elaine Boyer, who has been in office for more than 20 years, resigned from the DeKalb County commission around 5:00 p.m.

Boyer has been under federal investigation for allegations she mishandled tax payer money, reportedly using some of that money for personal expenses.

Boyer did not address any investigations in her resignation letter.

FOX 5 spoke with state representative Mary Margaret Oliver of Dekalb. Oliver has known Boyer for decades and says her political colleague was popular and trusted, among her constituents.

DeKalb interim CEO Lee May released the following statement Monday afteoon:

Recent news stories notwithstanding, Elaine Boyer has faithfully served the constituents of District 1 and DeKalb County for over 20 years. It is my sincere hope that her resignation will allow the healing process to begin and open the door for a new voice on the Board of Commissioners. I wish her the best.
