Lt Kevin Mayer of the San Diego Police Department said on Tuesday that officers were still trying to track down the owner of the car and the person who was driving at the time.

However, there is no indication that the vehicle was stolen.

Officers impounded the car, though no one has contacted the department to claim it.

'There’s a variety of reasons that someone would abandon a car after a crash,' Lt Mayer said.

'If it was stolen, if the driver was too scared to report a crash or if they were drinking and driving.'

Mayer said police have no indication that the crash was the result of alcohol.

The car was purchased just hours before the crash for $220,000, according to paperwork police found inside
