Donald Trump sues his own government for billions of dollars over leaked tax details
MIAMI — President Donald Trump and his two oldest sons filed a $10 billion lawsuit Thursday against the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Treasury Department, accusing the agencies of failing to stop the leak of their confidential tax information.
The suit, filed in federal court in Florida, names Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and the Trump Organization as plaintiffs. It alleges the disclosure of tax records caused reputational and financial harm and publicly embarrassed the family and their business.
The lawsuit stems from a breach involving Charles Edward Littlejohn, a former IRS contractor, who admitted he disclosed tax data to news organizations including The New York Times and ProPublica. Littlejohn was sentenced to five years in prison in 2024 after pleading guilty.
The complaint argues the government failed to properly safeguard taxpayer information and seeks punitive damages along with the multibillion-dollar claim.
