CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Clayton County mother accused of punching another parent on a school bus remains in jail.

On Thursday, Channel 2’s GA Daily News attended a 1:30 p.m. court hearing for Remecca Hines.

In court, Clayton County Magistrate Judge Bobby Simmons told Hines she faces battery charges and disrupting the operation of a public school. Police said the attack prevented dozens of children from getting to school on time.

"The defendant then got into a physical altercation with victim Kimberly Powell punching her in the left side of her face leaving visible bruises," Simmons said. "Defendants actions delayed the departure of the school bus causing over 50 children to be late for school."

A group of parents met at a school bus stop Wednesday because their kids had previously fought, neighbors said. They said a group of girls attacked Hines’ 11-year-old daughter the day before.

At some point during the Wednesday encounter, the parents gathered on the bus, and Hines punched another parent, neighbors said. But they said she was trying to be the peacemaker, and the other parent should have been charged also.

The fight happened on Excalibur Drive and Camelot Court in Riverdale Wednesday moing.

"I said, 'Ma'am, this is between children. This is not even between us,'" Powell said she recalled telling Hines minutes before she was punched in the face. "She's hitting me and I'm hitting her back trying to get her off me. And I'm like, 'Are you crazy?" Powell asked.

Powell said it all began after Hines' children attempted to fight her 13-year-old daughter. She was on the bus trying to get to my daughter, Powell said.

Hines' boyfriend told Jones she didn't go to the bus stop to start a fight. Michael Whatley thinks Hines shouldn't have been the only one locked up. "I think both of them should have been arrested. If they want to charge one of them. They should have charged both of them, he said."

Neighbors say it doesn't make sense for a fight between kids to end up with parents fighting and one being arrested. "If you out fighting what example does that give for the kids," Regina Heard said.
