Popular middle-school student passes out in class and later dies

A popular Clayton County middle-school student suffered "seizure-like" symptoms Thursday in class and later died at the hospital.

Vicki Constantinides, Clayton County Schools Communications Director, identified the student as Andrea Pinson, an eighth-grader at Pointe South Middle School in Jonesboro.

Constantinides said Andrea passed out in class Thursday. A school nurse was not on-site when the incident happened, but a school resource officer administered first aid. Andrea was rushed to Southe Regional Medical Center, where she died. Her cause of death was not immediately known.

"It was sad; I feel bad for her brother because when he goes home, he won't have a sister to talk to," said Cameronn Shelter, a seventh-grader at the school.

Constantinides said letters were sent home to parents Thursday night alerting them to what had happened.

Grief counselors will also be on-hand for both students and staff for the next few days.
