Christian college in San Diego fires employee Teri James for having premarital sex
Teri James was fired from the San Diego Christian College when she became pregnant, since the religious school says she violated their policy against premarital sex.
Now the single 29-year-old is suing, claiming the college discriminated against her because she was pregnant.
The school says she violated their code of conduct, signed by employees and students, that states 'no sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage.'
Ms James worked at the Southe Califoia college, in El Cajon, as a financial aid specialist.
She has retained attoey Gloria Allred who said at a press conference on Thursday, 'The HR director indicated that she was not being fired because she was pregnant,' according to KTLA.
The employee says she received a notice that she was being terminated because she 'engaged in activity outside the scope of the handbook and community covenant.'
'San Diego Christian College believes that marriage is a covenant relationship between a man and a woman, and that God has commanded that no sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage,' the handbook states.
Behavior: San Diego Christian College says James violated their code of conduct by having premarital sex
Though she did reportedly sign that clause, James says the college failed to show her compassion in her situation.
'I feel like what San Diego Christian College did to me was hurtful and un-Christ like,' she told the press.
'I was unmarried, pregnant and they took away my livelihood,' she added.
Her attoey said that college should be considered a business entity and cannot fire someone because they become pregnant.
The college did not respond to a request for comment.
