Bond set at $70,000 for babysitter Rachel Burrell charged in 9-year-old's shooting

Bond is set at $70,000 for a teen facing several charges after allegedly shooting a 9-year-old in Riverdale on Friday afteoon.

Police identified the teen as 19-year-old Rachel Burrell. 

Burrell had her first appearance in Clayton County Court on Saturday moing, as the child, who police said the teen may have been babysitting during the shooting, recovers in critical condition. Police said the semi-automatic pistol Burrell was handling went off, and a bullet struck the child in the stomach. The magazine had been removed, but a round was still in the chamber.

Friday night, police announced they had charged the teen with aggravated assault, reckless conduct, cruelty to children and possession of marijuana.

County authorities swarmed a neighborhood off Church Street where the child was found shot. Crime scene tape surrounded a home on Steepleridge Court as News Chopper 2 flew overhead.

Investigators said a 19-year-old female in the home had the gun in hand when it went off. Police said they are still trying to figure out why the gun went off.

"There were a number of children and adults in the residence, apparently in a babysitting kind of capacity, and the 19-year-old was either handling, playing with, cleaning, we don't know, the weapon and it discharged," said Riverdale Police Chief Samuel Patterson.

Investigators said the girl was able to tell them who shot her before being airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Investigators said they expect the 9-year-old girl to survive her injuries.
