Barbados Mother of Sick Child Told She Can Stay in US
A mother from Barbados who was being told she may have to leave her critically ill daughter in Atlanta received some good news Friday.
Petra Gooding says her immigration attoey got a call Friday moing from immigration.
They were told they are working on extending her visa to allow her to stay in the country until November.
Miss Gooding is in Atlanta because her 7-year old daughter Niamh Stoute is undergoing treatment for a stage four neuroblastoma.
The mother and daughter have been in the United States for nine months, since doctors in Barbados discovered the girl had a huge tumor in her abdomen.
The family -- who have private health insurance -- decided to come to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta because the hospital offers cutting edge treatment they couldn't get for Niamh at home.
But when the mother went to extend their visitor's visa, the daughter's was extended, but the mother was only given one month, and it was set to run out next week -- which would mean the mother would have to leave this country, leaving behind Niamh.
Now it appears that visa extension may come through after all.
Gooding says she will reapply again for an extension in November because Niamh's treatment could take 18 months.
