Atlanta Holds Off on Renaming Streets

ATLANTA - The Atlanta City Council has referred back to committee a proposal to rename downtown streets for developer John Portman and civil rights activist and broadcaster Xeona Clayton.

The council voted 9-to-5 on Monday to send back to committee a plan to rename Cone Street to Xeona Clayton Way and Harris Street to John C. Portman Boulevard.

The decision followed outcries against the changes from the downtown Neighborhood Planning Unit.

A laws passed in 2003 requires input from neighborhood planning units, historical preservation groups and an appearance before the Urban Design Commission before an Atlanta street name can be changed.
