AirTran Plane Hit By Lightning Over Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. - FOX 5 News has leaed that an AirTran plane was hit by lightning near Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Inteational Airport on Saturday evening. The plane landed at Atlanta's airport a short time later.

The airline says Flight 148, a Boeing 717 headed from Atlanta to Detroit, was struck by the bolt of lightning and forced to retu to the airport at about 6:30 p.m.  The bolt knocked out the plane's engine, but the pilot was able to restart it and declare an emergency.

The aircraft landed safely and taxied back to the gate.  AirTran says the 94 passengers onboard were not hurt, and they were being moved to a different aircraft to complete their trip to Detroit.
