Clayton County police officer Phong Nguyen told NBC affiliate WXIA that Ayvani's mother actually tried to hide the two kids.

"There was a little dog in the house and it started barking so the intruders shot the dog. They demanded money and jewellery from the mother," he said.

The mother said she didn't have any cash of value so they took Ayvani instead.

"Her 15-year-old brother was not harmed," police said.

The family took the dog to the vet but it did not survive.

Police said the armed suspects were driving a dark-blue Dodge or grey Chevrolet Impala.

"She's a really good kid," Lori Burroughs, who taught Ayvani at Dutchtown Middle School, told NBC News.

"She's really tiny, but she can be feisty - so I think that could be a good thing in this situation."
