8-year-old dies in Fulton County hit and run

Fulton County police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that left an 8-year-old girl dead on Tuesday night.  They say it happened around 8 p.m. in the 5300 block of Campbellton Road near Boat Rock Road.

Investigators say the little girl, Jaleah Felix of College Park, and her 9-year-old sister were walking to Sandtown Park across the street when she lost her shoe, and went back into the road to get it.  That's when she was hit by a dark SUV or pickup-style truck.  The driver left the scene.

Police are still trying to determine if the driver knew he hit Jaleah before leaving the scene.

"We do not know at this time. However, we are trying to find out any information about this vehicle," said Cpl. Kay Lester with Fulton County police.

Jaleah was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where she was first listed in critical condition.  The Fulton County medical examiner later confirmed that the girl had died.

Police say the two girls lived in a home across the street from the park, and were without their parents when the accident occured.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Fulton County police immediately.
