61-year-old Yaslyn Pratt killed in Palmetto house fire

A mobile home fire Monday moing resulted in the death of a 61-year-old woman from Palmetto.

Investigators said Yaslyn Pratt died in the fire that occurred shortly after 4 a.m. at the South Oaks community on 274 Caldwell Dr.

Georgia Newsday spoke to the victim's daughter, who rushed all the way from Dalton after hearing about Pratt.

"My mom is a good momma. I loved my momma," Shameeka Prather said.

Prather said she cannot believe that her mother is gone. Pratt's dog also perished in the fire.

"She loved her dog, Andrew. She loved Andrew, and they found them together at the window -- her and her dog," Prather said.

Prather said investigators told her the suspected cause of the fire was a space heater placed too close to bed spreads. She said her mother may have become confused, overcome by smoke and did not know how to escape as the fire quickly began to spread.

"The fire must have woken her up, and that it got so inflamed, she got disoriented and walked past the front door, ended up in this back bedroom and couldn't get out," said Prather.

Prather said her mother worked at a car rental company at Hartsfield Jackson Airport and loved her job and her co-workers. The office manager of the mobile home community said everyone is shocked by the loss of their neighbor.

"Everyone is very saddened. I've had a lot of them come into my office and call, asking if she is OK, and I've had to tell them she perished," said officer manager Vicky Lewis.

"She will do anything for anybody. She will give you anything. She is nice and kind," Prather said of her mother. "I just don't believe this."

The state fire marshals said they are continuing their investigation and have not made an official ruling on the cause of the fire.
