12 Year Old Travis Popham Drowns at Lake Allatoona

A 12-year-old boy drowned Saturday afteoon at Lake Allatoona northwest of Atlanta. Travis Popham was camping at the lake with extended family when he drowned in the swimming area at the Sweetwater Campground.

Popham's body was found by a man who was swimming in the same area, according to the Cherokee County Fire Department. A Fire Department spokesman says the man brought the boy to shore and called 911. Emergency crews arrived and attempted CPR on the boy before taking him to Northside Cherokee hospital. CPR was continued at the hospital for about 30 minutes before the boy was pronounced dead.

It's unclear how long the boy's body was submerged. Rescuers say the water was about 4 feet deep where the body was found.
