10 Children Rescued from Smugglers in Phoenix

PHOENIX - Authorities in Phoenix say 10 children have been rescued from human smugglers who threatened to rape and kill some of them if their parents didn't pay more money for their safe retu.

The children range in age from 2 to 17 and were smuggled from Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. They were being held against their will at a drop house in Phoenix.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Capt. Fred Zumbo says the smugglers threatened to rape and kill three sisters from El Salvador if their mother didn't pay them $10,000.

The mother, who is living legally in the U.S. in the San Francisco area, called authorities who found and raided the home where the children were being held Thursday night.

Two smugglers are in custody. Police say they were in the country illegally.
