Fire damaged: ATM machine is unrecognisable (Picture: YouTube/Seven News)

Setting a cash machine on fire using petrol is probably not the best technique to apply when attempting a robbery.

Three thieves in Australia found this out the hard way when their grand plan to steal money ended in misery after a cash dispenser exploded and covered them all in a fireball.

CCTV images posted online showed one of the men pouring the accelerant into the wall-mounted machine.

The petrol was then lit, which lead to the explosion.

At least two of the assailants are shown engulfed in flames.

It is not yet known whether the men were hurt but a Gold Coast police spokesman said this was possible. Needless to say they didn"t manage to escape with any money.
