Joke: The ad featured a picture of a man behind a woman with his hand in front of her eyes, giving her a small red box, and the caption read: 'The gift of Christmas surprise. Necklace? Or chloroform?'

The ad featured a picture of a man behind a woman with his hand in front of her eyes, giving her a small red box, and the caption read: 'The gift of Christmas surprise. Necklace? Or chloroform?' Virgin founder Sir Richard Bason, 62, said the online advert will be pulled after he 'made his thoughts clear' to the team at Virgin Mobile US and they 'acknowledge a dreadful mistake was made'.
