A deputy to the deceased mayor told AFP news agency that he did not believe the theories about his superior"s infidelity, instead describing the attack as ‘an act of madness".

According to regional newspaper Ouest-France, the 55-year-old had become a councillor in 2001 and then deputy mayor in 2008.

The small village is based in the Calvados region of Normandy, an area famous for its celebrated apple brandy.
