The Terminator films may actually have understated the speed and agility of the robot enemies humans are likely to face in any future war against machines – after MIT unveiled a 30mph robo-predator which bounds across uneven terrain like a cheetah.

Most robot animals (there are an unsettling number already) tend to totter about – MIT, seeing a gap in the market, created one that bounds smoothly, like a cheetah at full gallop.

The beast-machine weights around the same as an adult cheetah, and can continue running after clearing a hurdle, such as bounding over the remnants of your front door after it has smashed it in.

Thankfully, MIT refrained from giving it the razor-sharp teeth and insatiable appetite for raw flesh of its flesh-and-blood counterpart.

At least for now.
