Two Men Orvie Crawford, Stanley Hugh Ivy Arrested for Killing, Mutilating Deer

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Two Georgia men spent part of the day on Thursday behind bars, accused of mutilating and decapitating a deer. Investigators say the men took pictures of the 8-month-old deer as they killed it, and then tried to mail those photos to a woman who was locked up in the Gwinnett County Jail.

There were red flags as soon as the photos were delivered to the jail. Four images of the young deer—two of which were extremely graphic—quickly caught the attention of jail workers.

"This goes well beyond anybody that's hunting or killing deer for hunting purposes-- this was just sick," said Stacey Bourbonnais of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say the photos were actually made into postcards, which is the only type of mail inmates are allowed to get. They say a man sent them to his wife, who was behind bars, and the only thing more disturbing than what those photos show is what was written on the other side.

He described how he had the little deer on a leash, said Bourbonnais. ”He was leading it around. And then, he decides he’s going to kill it and he chokes it and then he stabs it, and then he mutilates it.

Gwinnett County sheriff's investigators say the 8-month-old deer was also decapitated.

Investigators say the man, 42-year-old Stanley Ivy, and his cousin, 39-year-old Orvie Crawford, both had a role in the killing. They were both arrested.

Investigators say Ivy wrote to his wife on the back of one postcard that he's a predator.

"What he was hoping by that I really don't know, said Bourbonnais. ”And then to send them to a jail-- that's not the brightest."

Police believe the killing happened at Crawford's home in Newton County. He also faces charges of methamphetamine possession. Ivy was charged with animal cruelty and violating his probation.

Gwinnett county investigators say additional charges could be filed against the men by the Department of Natural Resources.
