Twitter in trouble over '#GaysMustDie'
Twitter has been accused of allowing "the diffusion of a call for hatred against gay people," after the hashtag #LesGaysDoiventDisparatreCar ("Gay people must die") topped the list of trending topics in France.

A FRENCH gay rights group wants to take Twitter to court for allegedly violating hate speech laws, after the hashtag “#LesGaysDoiventDispaîratreCar” (\"Gay people must die\") topped the list of trending topics on the microblogging site.

The French committee of the Inteational Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) accused Twitter of allowing \"the diffusion of a call for hatred against gay people,\" as the tags #TeamHomophobes and #BrulonsLesGaysSurDu ('Let's bu gay people”) also gained momentum, according to The Local.

\"This is a completely blatant call for the death and murder of gay people. It is totally unacceptable,\" Alexandre Marcel from IDAHO told news service.

\"Twitter hasn't deleted a single homophobic tweet, nor removed a single homophobic hashtag from its list of most popular trending terms.\"

French Minister for Women's Rights, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, also took to Twitter to criticise the trend.

'I condemn homophobic tweets. Our work with Twitter and groups against homophobia, is essential,” she tweeted.

The \"gays must die\" controversy comes a month after a French court ordered Twitter to hand over data to authorities to help identify the authors of anti-Semitic tweets.
