A LOS Angeles TV reporter has been diagnosed with a brain tumour which was announced by her co-workers on Good Day LA.

Julie Chang moved from New York to LA a year ago to take up her new position at KTTV.

After a surfing accident though she had a CT scan after her headaches wouldn't go away which detected the tumour.

Chang is having surgery this week to have the tumour removed.

"LA, thank you. If it wasn't for my move to Southe Califoia, I would've never taken up surfing, which in a way, may have saved my life," she said in a statement. "I promise I will retu stronger and who knows, maybe smarter!"

"In the next few days and weeks, the tumor will go, the hair will grow back," her statement read by anchor Steve Edwards continued. "I will recover with the warmth you have given me since my first day here on Fox 11."

Chang kept the tumour a secret from her colleagues until she needed to take medical leave.

"This has been two months in the working and we didn't know," chimed lifestyle reporter Lisa Breckenridge.

It comes after US ABC reporter Amy Robach had a mammogram live on air which found that she had breast cancer.

Lisa Wilkinson and Georgie Gardiner also underwent mammograms on the Today show. Both came back fine but Wilkinson's scan did detect some cysts.
